TwitNit was developed by Brandon Wirtz as a proof of concept UI for Search. Brandon feels that by placing multiple elements on the screen at the same time the quality of the top results can help the user determing if they have made the right selection of keywords for their query.
The combination of Realtime and traditional results lets the user get both a sense of what has happened and what is happening. For example moments after an earthquake Twitter provides the best results, but an hour later News may have more hard facts, and twitter have more �state of things�. A month later images and Video may provide the best way to connect with events, Twitter would have better results for how the aftermath is coming, and news and web search would have the best statistical information.
Traditionally a user has to run multiple searches at multiple sites to get this information, but with TwitNit all of the information is in one place, and presented in a UI that allows the user to expand the portions of relevant search.
